
NSW power utilities should invest in efficient technology, new LNG developments in Queensland are certain to push up domestic gas prices, and a carbon price alone won't be enough to get Australia "anywhere near" the 2020 emission reduction target, according to TruEnergy Australia chief executive Richard McIndoe.
Opening a series of four discussions for the Committee for Economic Development of Australia yesterday, Mr McIndoe said no new entrant to the Australian power market would be likely to be able to finance "one penny" in new baseload generating technology until they were certain of the date when coal-fired power stations were decommissioned.
Australia has a bipartisan policy to cut emissions to 5 per cent below 2000 levels by 2020.
