Norway’s record of environmental protection and sustainable development is good. It has improved air and water quality and wildlife protection, spearheaded international initiatives to combat climate change, deforestation and illegal fishing and doubled its environmental aid since 2006.
The OECD’s Environmental Review says that Norway should now devise cost-effective policies to meet its ambitious environmental goals, including for climate and biodiversity.
Prior to the global economic downturn, Norway was far from reaching its target to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 9% below 1990 levels by 2012. Nevertheless, it has now pledged to reduce net GHG emissions by 30-40% by 2020, provided other major emitting countries also commit to serious emissions reductions. It plans to do this largely through domestic action, which would be more expensive than purchasing emission reductions credits on international markets.
