Making the transition to a green economy fair and equitable


Public Symposium 2011Shifting to "green" economic growth is inevitable, UNCTAD Public Symposium panellists said - but difficult. Among other things, it must support rather than hinder efforts to raise living standards in developing countries.

The second day's roundtable of the three-day Symposium focused on how to make the transition to the green economy "fair and equitable". The developing world has a fundamental right to better living standards, and efforts to cope with climate change and related environmental problems must contribute to rather than interfere with those aspirations, panellists agreed. Some said, however, that shifts towards a green economy did present opportunities for developing nations.
