Rationale
This project, newly launched in 2010, focuses on one of the most serious challenges now facing society in the United States and around the world. Climate change is resulting in risks to biodiversity and to human life and health. Disturbances in weather (violent storms, flooding, heat waves, prolonged drought), sea level rise, disruption of fresh water supplies, and similar events are disrupting social and economic systems and will cause the displacement of large populations, and create conditions for epidemic, violence, and political instability. To adapt to the damage caused to both ecosystems and social systems, advance planning and preparation for such disastrous emergency events must be and is being undertaken. In addition to the vital effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and limit the rise in global temperatures, measures of preparation and adaptation are now underway.
