The death penalty is the ultimate denial of human rights. It is the premeditated and cold-blooded killing of a human being by the state in the name of justice. The use of the death penalty is often discriminatory, disproportionately targeting the poor and marginalized. It has not been shown to be an effective deterrent against crime and denies the possibility of rehabilitation and reconciliation. It adds the suffering of the condemned prisoner’s family to the suffering of the victim’s loved ones. Above all, as long as human justice remains fallible, the risk of executing the innocent can never be eliminated.
The death penalty is a symptom of a culture of violence, not a solution to it. It is an affront to human dignity. It should be abolished.
