The Business Opportunity in Adding Value to Small Farmers in Africa

Food is essential for sustaining life, so while the growing global population is a boon for business there is also major concern echoed around the world as to whether or not we can generate enough food to feed a world population of over 9 billion in less than 100 years. Since Africa holds much of the available arable land in the world, there is hope that it will begin to feed its own and also contribute to the food supply needed globally.

However, Africa’s history in the last 40 years concerning agriculture, e.g., many African countries becoming net importers of food, suggests it will be a severe challenge to turning it around. Some key methods for changing the tide are building off of the success of others, learning from models of success, and collectively leveraging resources.
