
A FUNCTION at Sydney's Sofitel Hotel yesterday was a noteworthy event. It was the first public outing for the new head of Woolworths, Grant O'Brien. He sat on the podium next to Commonwealth Bank chief Ralph Norris, the chairman of Macquarie Bank Kevin McCann, Qantas boss Alan Joyce, Telstra's supremo David Thodey and a clutch of other captains of industry.
The cause which drew these men together was, strangely, women. So much testosterone was on the stage that it seemed incongruous that they were there to deliver a collective mea culpa about the state of female participation in Australian corporations and in particular among the management ranks.
