The problem with green rankings

League tables of companies' environmental performance are undermined by their failure to account for corporate lobbying

News Corporation – a multinational media conglomerate that includes BSKYB, Dow Jones, Fox News, 20th Century Fox and Star, among other units – announced earlier this year that it has become climate neutral, meaning that its operations have no net impact on global climate change.

This seemingly impossible feat, claimed by a growing number of companies, is achieved by calculating the greenhouse-gas emissions of the organisation's operations, investing in energy efficiency and other methods to reduce those emissions, and purchasing carbon credits to offset any remaining emissions.
