Girl Power and Governance

Society is getting impatient with the slow progress of women at top levels of the corporate world. Quotas may force a shift, but success depends on building a pipeline of qualified women ready to take on the responsibility of governance.

Over the past 50 years, women have made remarkable strides in increasing their role and visibility in politics and society. In business, however, they remain severely underrepresented, particularly at the higher echelons of leadership. Latin America and Europe are leaders in this area, with 24 and 28 percent of available positions held by women respectively. In Asia, female representation among senior management varies widely across countries, but on average, women comprise 21 percent of senior management, in line with the global average. North America ranks lowest, with women holding only 18 percent of senior management positions.
