Shelter, literacy and food security focus for Mandela Day 2013

This year's Nelson Mandela International Day which marks the ailing statesman's 95th birthday will focus on shelter, literacy and food security.

The day was launched earlier on Wednesday as the former president spends his 12th day in hospital. People around the world are encouraged to give 67 minutes of their time to their communities in honour of his contributions to South Africa and the world.

Initiatives include taking food to disadvantaged people, visiting old age homes, reading to children at orphanages or making a small donation to a charity of their choice. Chief Executive Officer of the Nelson Mandela Foundation Sello Hatang says over the years they have learnt that communities would like more sustainable projects.
