Improving global food security without rocket science


Tackling post-harvest loss in developing countries is not rocket science, writes Ertharin Cousin. Through efforts such as the Purchase for Progress (P4P) pilot project – partially funded by the European Union – the World Food Programme is trying to help smallholder farmers while cutting food loss and waste.

Ertharin Cousin is executive director of the UN World Food Programme in Rome. She met recently in Brussels with EU officials to discuss the Syrian crisis response and attended the EU-backed Mali donor conference on 15 May.

Whenever I have the privilege of spending time among the people that the World Food Programme (WFP) serves, I come away enriched with precious extra knowledge and inspired by the new ways in which governments are tackling the world’s greatest solvable problem – hunger. That happened again recently when I was in Burkina Faso, heartened to see the results of efforts to help communities become more resilient to shocks, especially climate-related ones.
