Women leaders: Shifting from creating opportunity to active responsibility as career sponsor

The setting was the historic Sewall-Belmont House in Washington, D.C., headquarters of the National Woman’s Party and its pioneering suffragists of the 1900s. That evening in Washington, the women leaders in attendance seemed to reach an understanding that we must actively help younger women get ahead, intentionally keeping in mind those who are just starting their careers and making their way through an organization. We have to be more than just mentors who provide advice and a sounding board. We have to be active sponsors and advocates. We have to help other women via the power of formal influence and the power of informal networks.
