Wind Power set to boom in Mexico

New Energy Reform to open up market

Mexico City, 28 February 2014 – Mexico WindPower 2014 wrapped up last night on a high note, with delegates anticipating a booming wind market in Mexico as a result of the new Energy reform bill passed last December. The new legislation marks the beginning of the end of Mexico’s 75 year-old oil, gas and electricity monopoly, establishes an electricity market, and will give wind power the opportunity to compete.

The conference was opened by Mexican Secretary of energy Pedro Joaquín Coldwell, representing President Enrique Peña Nieto. Secretary Coldwell conveyed the President’s message that no limit will be set for private investors wanting to do business in Mexico, and that the role of the new Independent System Operator (CENACE) will be key to ensuring fair access to the grid, as well as a functioning market. The Secretary also emphasized the key role of renewable energy in building a sustainable future for all Mexicans, reconfirming the target of 35% of electricity from renewable energy by 2024.
