"Russia and the World: Sustainable Development"

When: January 15 - 18, 2014
Where: Russia

The Gaidar Forum is one of the major annual international scientific conferences in the field of economy in Russia. The Forum was established in 2010 in tribute to the memory of Yegor Gaidar, the leading Russian economist and the architect of the Russian reforms of the early 1990s. Over this time, the Forum has become the country’s central political and economic event.

In 2014 the Forum will take place on January 15-18 and will be dedicated to one of the most important modern challenges – sustainable development. The conference "Russia and the World: Sustainable Development" will focus on such top-priority issues as economic growth in the context of global transformations, its potential and effective management, risks associated with innovative entrepreneurship, new industrialization, contradictions of resource-based economies and controversial effects of modernization for the country’s socio-political and economic development.

End ignorance at the Geneva Summit For Human Rights and Democracy

Joint Conference by Transparency International and the OECD

There has been a lot of talk about the loss of trust since the global financial, economic and social crisis unravelled. Mistrust is in part derived from perceptions of corporate greed, corruption and bad management in the lead up to the crisis, but governments are blamed too, both for failing to prevent the crisis from happening, and also for their slow progress in presenting solutions to issues such as high unemployment and rising inequality. According to the Gallup World Poll, the average confidence in national governments in OECD countries stood at 40% in 2012, down from 45% in 2007. This loss of trust in the system is especially true for young people who feel their voices are not being heard and fear their future is being jeopardised.

How can we earn back the trust of young people? Improving openness, transparency, accountability, and access to information is essential. On the occasion of the International Anti-Corruption Day and Transparency International’s 20th Anniversary, the OECD and Transparency International are inviting young people for a discussion about how to push the integrity agenda forward together.

The conference is organised with and for young people as well as representatives from civil society, trade unions, business, governments and parliaments.

High-level round table on market approaches for enhanced climate action

Many of the issues under consideration in Warsaw seek to strengthen the suite of tools that Parties, the private sector and civil society have at their disposal to incentivize investment to address climate change and facilitate international cooperation in a cost efficient way.

Examples include the existing market-based mechanisms under the Kyoto Protocol, Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions, the New Market Mechanism, Non-market-based approaches, and Framework for various approaches.

This round table aims to cut through the complexity of the UNFCCC negotiations with respect to how and where market-based tools and approaches are addressed, both inside and outside the UNFCCC process, in an effort to avoid overlapping features and double counting of efforts and to promote efficiency.

  • Geopolitical implications of oil and gas production, supply and demand forecasts
  • Energy policies, decarbonisation, power investment and the fuel mix
  • Unconventional production and evolving market relationships
  • Developments and opportunities in frontier producer regions

International Seminar on 'A Pivotal Turn in Global Climate Governance?'

Much has changed since the onset of the global climate regime in the early 1990s. The globalization of the Western economic model and the rise of emerging economies are transforming the very structure of global governance. Due to decades of energy-intensive economic growth and exponential rise in greenhouse gas emissions, major developing countries such as China can no longer be on the sidelines. But even smaller emerging economies such as Vietnam are expected to participate fully in a future agreement. The 2011 Durban Platform, launched to negotiate a global deal by 2015, will need to confront the differentiation of commitments to ensure wider participation. This international seminar addresses how the European Union attempts to build multilateral support for future global climate action and how it develops practical bilateral cooperation with emerging economies such as China and Vietnam. These experiences also provide valuable lessons for international negotiations under the UNFCCC umbrella. As climatologists are calling for a peak in global emissions before 2020, a ‘pivotal turn’ in global climate governance is urgently required if the world is serious about reaching the 2°C target agreed upon in Copenhagen.

Irish EU Presidency, News items : 20130606 EU Green Week 2013

Reflecting the Air Quality theme of EU Green Week 2013 and coinciding with World Environment Day, Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Phil Hogan announced that the Irish Government has approved his proposal for Ireland to join the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC). The overarching objective of the CCAC, which was established in 2012, is to reduce the impacts of short-lived climate pollutants (or SLCPs), through complementary, short-term measures for addressing climate change, under the overall stewardship of UNEP.

Ireland is joining over 30 developed and developing countries, as well as representatives of business, environmental NGOs and the scientific research community, in seeking to collaborate and progress a range of initiatives that can complement work being progressed under the UN Framework Convention for Climate Change to reduce emissions of harmful greenhouse gases and help to slow and ultimately reverse the trend of increasing global temperatures. In deciding to join the Coalition, Minister Hogan highlighted the importance of working with other progressive countries and partners to take action that can address both climate change and air pollution issues.
