Back To Basics


Lately, it seems we're always suffering a "crisis of leadership." Unsatisfied with those now in positions of power, we yearn instead for superior leaders of the past, such as George Washington or John Adams, or maybe even a late bloomer more recently mythologized, like Harry Truman.

But were yesterday's leaders better than today's? Well, yes. Past leaders were, among other things, better prepared by both education and experience to deal with the problems they faced, no matter how seemingly intractable.

By and large, America's political leaders lack the education and experience that would prepare them for leadership in a changing world. Of the 100 Senators in the 108th Congress, 61 have law degrees. Is law school the best possible education for leadership in the 21st century?
