Business as a force for good in society


"I think the greatest challenge is for business to persuade people that it can be trusted as a force for good in society and to do this it must cultivate high ethical standards and moderate some of the excesses that can damage its reputation." These are the words of David Harris, recipient of the WBCSD Honors. He dedicated 16 years of his distinguished career to furthering the mission of the WBCSD.

Why is sustainable development (SD) important to you?

I was first introduced to the concept of sustainable development when I was invited to work with the Business Council for Sustainable Development (BCSD) shortly after this was founded by Stephen Schmidheiny in 1990 to provide a global business perspective on SD for the UN Conference on Environment and Development, held in Rio in 1992, and also to stimulate the interest and involvement of the international business community in SD.

The BCSD took up the definition of SD adopted by the World Commission on Environment and Development in 1987 (the Brundtland Commission) namely a form of development or progress that "meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
