Changes in wind for energy target


LABOR will consider reserving part of its 20 per cent renewable energy target for base-load solar, geothermal and tidal power amid concerns about a rush on investment in wind power.

Labor's scheme for a mandatory target of 20 per cent renewable energy by 2020 was shot down last week in the Senate after being linked to the failed emissions trading legislation.

Opposition, Greens and independent senators accused the Government of playing politics for refusing to separate the emissions trading bill, which they oppose, from the renewable energy target, which has universal support.

But shadow environment minister Greg Hunt said Labor had agreed on Friday to consider Opposition amendments that would decouple the two bills.
