Seeking to make corporations more accountable to shareholders, renowned shareholder activist Robert A. G. Monks has appealed to the Securities and Exchange Commission to allow a vote on a shareholder proposal that would require ExxonMobil to have an independent director serve as chairman of the board for the first time in the energy giant's history.
