BHP world's 'best run' firm

Australian miner BHP Billiton has topped a list of the world's best-run companies, winning the title from 2,200 other companies in a global survey.

The world's top five performers are BHP Billiton; Smith & Nephew, a UK medical devices company; utility Scottish Power; UK telecoms company BT Group; and Cognos.

Stock index provider FTSE Group and corporate governance specialists Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS) outlined how they rank companies in their FTSE ISS Corporate Governance Index series, which was launched in December.
