CEO pay keeps climbing
Compensation for the highest-paid CEOs at public companies with Triangle headquarters ranged from $5 million to $18 million last year. Companies are less likely to give stock options.
Among the captains of local public companies, the leader of the Triangle's largest took home the biggest paycheck last year.
But he was trumped in total compensation by four others.
Robert B. McGehee, the chief executive of Progress Energy, earned $1.75 million in salary and bonus in 2004. The CEOs of SpectraSite, Martin Marietta Materials, R.H. Donnelley and Trimeris all received larger pay packages. They benefited from stock grants and other perks distributed to those at the top.
