UK non-executive director pay hits record level


Annual fees for non-executive directors of the UK's leading companies have risen to record levels as a result of higher workloads prompted by the Higgs report.

Of the FTSE-350 companies that reviewed fees between January 2004 and March 2005, the average increase for non-executives was 21 per cent, according to Incomes Data Services, a pay consultancy.

IDS - whose research is closely followed by government departments and unions - said fee levels were increasing because of more intense investor scrutiny, higher corporate governance responsibilities and bigger workloads.
