
The fact that women are making up a more than proportionate share of governance committee positions is good news. Not only because they are beginning to see the light in terms of more appointments, but also because this will become one of the most important committees and it is important to ensure diversity within it.
A concern is how few companies still feel the need to have a governance committee at all. These are the sorts of companies that complain about too much regulation and then do little when they are left to themselves. Will they never learn!

Board appointments are still rare for women in Australian business. But once they have cracked the glass ceiling there tends to be a disproportionate number of women serving on board committees where important, but lower-profile, issues are handled.
Corporate governance committees, a relatively new board function for companies listed on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX), are an extreme example of this phenomena, with a heavy over-representation of women members, according to a study by Perth academic Winkie Wong.
