
Christine Chan Wai-Yee leads a double life. By day, she's number-crunching as PCCW's vice-president for taxation, but some nights she doubles as corporate Samaritan.
During the past few months, Chan has befriended an elderly woman under a volunteer programme run by the telecoms company. She phones the woman on a weekly basis to chat and, once a month, visits her at her Chai Wan housing estate.
"Her husband died and she has no children," Chan says. "No one visits her, so she's happy to see me or even just get a call. I sometimes take her out for dinner. When I see her happy, I'm happy."
The benefits of good works are obvious: a bit of tax relief along with an image boost. But companies are no longer content to just cough up funds for worthy causes. These days they're launching activities such as reading clubs and working with the mentally handicapped. That kind of investment in resources is also rewarded with high morale.
