Indispensability of corporate governance


Corporate governance is one of the most talked about issues. It is not only an issue of corporate sector but also a national issue. An international conference was recently held at Dhaka Sheraton Hotel attended by the local and international experts and agencies. Centre for Corporate Governance and Finance studies of the Dhaka University, in association with the Dhaka Stock Exchange Ltd, organised the conference. Several factors on the issue were hotly discussed in the perspective at domestic and global level.

Corporate governance is an unknown phenomenon to us though it was introduced in most of Asia long time ago. It has different forms in different countries of the world. Anglo-American system of corporate governance is followed in America and England. Germany follows the continental system and Japan the 'Extended' system. By following Anglo-American system, America has acquired a strong functional background in their capital market. The spirit of the concept of corporate governance is essential to our socio-economic condition. Moreover, in an emerging market, the transition economies like ours are dominated by the developed countries. So we have to establish it positively in our economy.
