It is wrong to defend national icons


Of course the brazen nationalism of these politicians is such that good governance does not enter into the equation. Control and pride is all that matters.

And the way they define 'national' is made up as they go along!

In the classic 1962 film Totò Truffa the Italian comic actor Totò “sells” Rome’s Trevi Fountain to an American tourist for 10m lire. Dominique de Villepin and the French political establishment must believe they have averted an even bigger sale of a national icon with their aggressive defence of Danone from a rumoured hostile bid from PepsiCo.

A similar level of elation is being felt on Capitol Hill, where well-lobbied senators sabotaged a bid from CNOOC, the Chinese oil group, and delivered Unocal to the local hero Chevron.
