Finding the right NED
Discarding the “who do you know?” method, more and more companies are turning to headhunters to advise on the appointment of non-executive directors – a growing influence in today’s top boardrooms.
Searches for non-executive directors are among the most difficult to undertake. You are seeking a subtle blend of experience, skill and personality and the outstanding candidate is not as visible as an executive director. Nonetheless, the preparations for a NED assignment follow the same detailed and comprehensive pattern as for a managing director or marketing director.
It is essential to meet all the board and as many of the other key players as possible, which would include external advisers such as merchant banks and stockbrokers and heads of major operating divisions if they are not on the board.
