Governance lesson sinking in


Australian companies are pulling up their corporate governance socks but many have left an Achilles heel exposed, this year's Horwath Corporate Governance report has found.

The number of companies awarded a five-star rating by Horwath Australia has doubled over the past year, with 33 out of 250 companies surveyed found to have an "unequivocal level" of independence within their board of directors, audit, remuneration and nomination committees, and in their relationship with external auditors.

AMP, Commonwealth Bank, Telstra, and plumbing and electrical supplies company Crane Group ranked equal first.

But for many, the weak link remains a lack of true director independence.
