Growing importance of corporate governance

Corporate governance is becoming all the more important locally as the government prepares to involve as much as possible the private sector in delivering public sector services, parliamentary secretary Tonio Fenech said yesterday.

Mr Fenech was speaking at a seminar on corporate governance organised by the Institute of Directors (IOD) in Attard.

He said Maltacom, BOV, Valletta port services and the energy market – which are earmarked for privatisation by the government – were sensitive sectors.

“These are sensitive sectors, but as true to our belief that we as a government should limit ourselves to facilitating and where necessary regulating rather then operating in the market, the companies that will run these businesses and operations must also have the right ingredients not merely in terms of access to innovation, markets and new opportunities, but also a sound basis of corporate governance and social responsibility,” Mr Fenech said.
