Stricter accounting regulations fuel local and nationwide shortage

When recruiters at S.J. Gallina & Co. want to hire a new certified public accountant, the first place they turn to isn't the newspaper classifieds, job boards or college career fairs. Instead, the San Jose accounting firm leaves the hiring up to its existing employees -- sort of.

Every time an employee recommends a new hire that stays on for at least six months, the company rewards them with a hefty cash bonus ranging from $5,000 to $10,000.

"We found that our referral program really helps us compete in a tight labor market because our accountants are going to know other accountants," says managing partner Darren Sparks. "We specialize in working with real estate and construction companies so people that work for us or want to work for us have a focused niche. Our employee referral program helps us target the kinds of people we need."
