How not to choose a successor


Based on their handling of succession within their respective parties, both former Leader of the Opposition Edward Seaga and Prime Minister PJ Patterson flunked their final test.

Mr Seaga's departure from representational politics and from his position as leader of the Jamaica Labour Party could serve as a case study of what can happen when a leader overstays his time in office. The situation was made worse by his admission that after one of the longest careers at the forefront of Jamaican politics, he had not managed to develop a single individual in whom he could place confidence, and who would not drop the leadership baton if it were passed to him.
