When shopfitting entre preneur Amanda Boyle walked into a new store which had just been fitted out for shoe retail chain Schuh, she knew instantly that it had been painted the wrong shade of green.
“The painter just shrugged and said: ‘It’s green, what’s the problem?’ But to the client, it’s a case of their corporate identity and we have to get it right, down to every last detail,” says Boyle.
The co-founder of Perth-based Caledonia Contracts ordered a complete overhaul, and as a result, Schuh, which has 40 stores nationwide, became a valued long-term client.
Boyle, who was named Female Director of the Year and Non-executive Director of the Year at the Institute of Directors Scotland awards in Glasgow last week, is a livewire and outspoken boss thriving in a male-dominated industry. She spent a decade working in communications roles before switching to shopfitting and says she was appalled at the poor level of client communications in the industry when she started the company with business partner and veteran shopfitting consultant Stuart McNally.
