The chief executive of Eni, Italy's largest oil and gas group, yesterday said a merger with Enel, the electricity utility, was not on its agenda and there had been no discussions with the government about a deal.
Paolo Scaroni, speaking while Enel's board was meeting to discuss its response to the planned merger in France of Suez and Gaz de France, pointed out that the idea of an Eni-Enel merger had been floated before, and had come to nothing. "Our plan does not include it. We have been totally out of the debate," he told the Financial Times.
