Chairmen: Difficult role has better back-up


The days of the great dictator are over. In most British boardrooms the all-powerful executive chairman is no more. Under pressure from successive corporate governance codes, many British quoted companies now have a non-executive chairman, and a full-time chief executive reporting to the chairman and the rest of the board.

Nothing better illustrates the extent to which compliance issues now impinge upon the agenda of both the chairman and the board.
