India wants a more serious EU

Europe lacks a strategic vision and ranks at the bottom of the list of partners in India’s multipolar understanding of the future of world affairs. This is one the findings of a new report by Chatham House and the Robert Schuman Foundation (France). The report also argues that the concept of the EU is not one readily understood by Indians and that Indian business and political figures prefer to deal bilaterally with individual European states.

The report continues by saying that for many Indians Europe is simply unattractive, especially by comparison with the United States. Europe’s lack of coherent foreign policy is also seen as being viewed by India as a serious and ongoing problem.

On the positive side the report does say that India views European economic integration as a source of inspiration for similar enhanced Asian economic cooperation.
