Press can serve the governance cause
Among the many things mentioned in a report last week about the state of corporate governance in the GCC was the role of the financial press.
The report produced jointly by Hawkama, or the Institute for Corporate Governance, based in the Dubai International Financial Centre, and the Institute for International Finance, said the business press does not do enough to push good corporate governance.
"In many emerging markets, the press not only exposes companies that break the rules but also lauds those that follow good governance practices. In the GCC, the financial press has limited influence on changing corporate governance practices or on putting pressure on regulators to take action when wrongful practices have been discovered," the report said.
