Bushels of Motivation


We learned a lot about marketing from my mother, and all the lessons you learn growing up on a family farm. We picked asparagus and helped pick corn and potatoes from a very young age, 4 or 5. My dad got special equipment for us because we had smaller hands. There was not a question of do you help but when you help.

We grew butternut squash, and you could sell it wholesale by the bushel or in a big crate. My mother, I remember, went into a grocery store and saw squash that had been cut up. She thought, “If I can do that, we can make a much bigger margin on the squash.”

She went to the local supermarket and said, “I’d like to talk to the produce manager.” He agreed to buy the cut-up squash, and she parlayed that into providing four or five local businesses, restaurants, a Stop & Shop, etc., with cut-up squash.
