Don’t get fooled again - you’re not too old for the job


How would you expect a distinguished 61-year-old man to behave? With restraint, perhaps, a certain decorum and calm? What you would probably not expect him to do is adopt a heroic, macho pose while windmilling his right arm through the air to the delight of the crowd standing in front of him.

But that was the image that confronted me on late-night television just over a week ago. The arm in question belonged, of course, to Pete Townshend, lead guitarist of The Who, and the crowd were the lucky few who had gathered in London’s Roundhouse to enjoy the highlight of the BBC’s recent “Electric Proms” concerts.
