Why perfectionism is not a good thing


Perfectionism sometimes sounds like a desirable trait to have in your life, but the truth is that perfectionism can prevent a person from achieving success or feeling personal satisfaction.

If you set unrealistically high goals and feel that whatever you achieve is not quite enough, then you might be a perfectionist. If you put off finishing projects so that you can get them just right, you might be a perfectionist. And if you feel like you have to give 110 percent on everything you do, then you might be a perfectionist.

If perfectionism is a problem for you, then it is likely that as you were growing up you were given the message that you were only valued for your achievements and accomplishments, not for who you truly were. If that was your reality, then you probably rely heavily on others’ approval, and that in turn can make a person overly sensitive to criticism and opinions of others. So in order to protect those oversensitized parts of yourself, you might have decided that being perfect was your only defense.
