Defining the debate – Corporate responsibility on a sticky Wiki


Wikipedia’s evolving definition of corporate social responsibility shows how the debate can so easily become removed from what companies are actually doing, says Mallen Baker

A year or so ago I looked at the entry for “corporate social responsibility” on the community-run Wikipedia. It gave a reasonably descriptive overview, plus some helpful links to organisations at the centre of corporate responsibility activity.

Last month I went back and found it had become a battleground of ideologies.

The history of recent edits shows a struggle of opposing views. In this, the Wiki entry has come to represent the growing polarisation of rhetoric, which is becoming less and less relevant to what businesses are actually doing.
