Women as change agents


Women continue to make inroads into the boardroom, slowly but surely, according to a joint survey from Heidrick & Struggles and Women Corporate Directors.

The increased representation by women among corporate boards continues a trend that has been present for several years; however, women still lag far behind their male counterparts. Both established women directors and those seeking board seats for the first time revealed in the survey that they still find themselves fighting an uphill battle for equal representation.

However, the survey shows that it’s a fight that women are more than willing to face with a united front. Almost unanimously, respondents said that sitting women directors could make a difference in helping their peers gain board seats.

They were also just short of unanimous in saying that they suggest other women when declining offers for board seats. At least 90 percent of women surveyed said they regularly network with women who could make good board directors. The same sweeping majority said other women have approached them for advice on the best ways to attain board seats.
