Dutch bank chief warns over ABN break-up

The Dutch Central Bank (DNB) on Wednesday threatened to stir further controversy over the destiny of ABN Amro when it warned that an offer by a consortium proposing the bank’s break-up would “increase risks and complications.”

The strongly-worded statement came in the wake of an earlier outburst by Nout Wellink, central bank governor, who said an attack on ABN by an activist UK hedge fund demanding a break-up was “a bridge too far”.

Mr Wellink was criticised for that remark, which commentators said smacked of protectionism, and then told the Financial Times last week he would not stand in the way of a break-up of ABN by another bank if a solid case could be argued for that to happen.

Wednesday’s missive from DNB was directed at Royal Bank of Scotland, Fortis, the Belgo-Dutch financial institution, and Spain’s Santander, who are understood to want to split ABN’s global operations between them.
