Solicitors' FTSE 100 scheme to raise diversity awareness
The Law Society is sponsoring the development of a scheme which encourages FTSE 100 firms to monitor the ethnic composition of law firms tendering for contracts.
The project, which was initiated by the Society of Asian Lawyers and supported by BT, will focus on best practice in procurement policy for the purchase of legal services with the aim of achieving greater fairness and diversity within large City firms. Companies will be able to use their purchasing power to ask their suppliers to demonstrate their commitment to diversity.
Under the proposed scheme, known as the Diversity Charter, FTSE 100 companies will request diversity information from law firms during the tendering process. Firms will be required to demonstrate their commitment to diversity by providing relevant policies and statistical information. The scheme aims to raise awareness on the benefit for having a diverse legal team and to help identify obstacles to diversity faced by purchasers of legal services.
