Why chief executives should resist politics


For a chief executive it is always very flattering to be asked by the leader of a government to take charge of an important ministerial portfolio. But tempting as this may be, it often turns into a bad career move and one that most top managers end up regretting.

In the case of France, most public servants cannot wait to switch from influential jobs assisting and advising ministers to the private sector and its higher pay. But in the past few years, two prominent French chief executives have crossed the political Rubicon and agreed to serve as finance and economy ministers.
