Meeting the challenge of environmental stewardship


The stakeholders taking part in ICMM's recent opinion survey singled out environmental issues as by far their most serious concern related to the industry. Anglo American's Peter Coombes outlines how ICMM and its members are demonstrating their environmental credentials

Peter Coombes is chairman of ICMM's environmental and biodiversity task forcePublic concerns surrounding the mining and metals industry have been expressed for many years. More recently this concern has shifted to strong expectation and demand for improved environmental performance, which in turn has resulted in an increase in regulatory requirements. The industry is under pressure and has accountability to a range of stakeholders for improved environmental practice on the ground.

One private sector respondent to the ICMM survey neatly summed up this challenge when they cited "reducing the ecological footprint of the industry while producing increasing volumes of product to meet the demands of developing society" as a key issue facing the industry. The growing demand for resources and increasing global focus on climate change in recent years has heightened the importance of strong performance in this area.
