Act now or pay later


Techies are in increasingly short supply; unless action is taken now to fill the gap, enterprises around the globe are soon likely to feel the strain. Frances Davies reports.

The US is facing a looming crisis – a severe shortage of skilled IT workers. Since the mid-1980s, considerably fewer people are enrolling on computer science, technical and engineering courses at university. Consequently, as a generation of technology experts creep closer to retirement there are not enough graduates to replace them. A study at the end of last year by PricewaterhouseCoopers revealed that a global war for technology talent is imminent. Worryingly, the results revealed that 41 percent of global technology companies are finding it difficult to locate technical skills, whilst 48 percent are having trouble retaining the talent they do find.

Rick Davidson, CIO of global recruitment firm Manpower, is well aware of the problem, its contributing factors and the consequences if action isn’t taken to reverse the trend.
