Leaders should not be lonely at the top


Among the details that have emerged about Stan O’Neal, chairman and chief executive of Merrill Lynch, who is expected to resign over the investment bank’s blunders in the credit markets, probably the most telling is that Mr O’Neal often plays golf by himself.

Mr O’Neal has long had a reputation within Merrill Lynch as a loner. He is known within the firm, which grew up as a retail broker and has been dubbed the Thundering Herd, as a ruthless leader. Since his appointment in 2001, he has repeatedly forced out senior figures who lost his confidence.
