Climate change 'serious threat' to coastal towns

Climate change poses a "real and serious threat" to Victoria's 2000-kilometre coastline, according to a State Government report that warns of an increase in sea levels and widespread destruction of coastal habitats.

The Victorian Coastal Strategy, to be made public today, predicts a bleak future for many coastal towns as they come under stress from climate change and population growth.

The report, by the Victorian Coastal Council, says previous forecasts have significantly underestimated global warming's effects.

"Since 1990, sea level has risen faster than what the models have projected . . . " the report says. "For planning purposes, we will assume a sea level rise of approximately 0.4 to 0.8 metres by the end of the century."
