That two billionaires have tea together and the law against term limits gets changed, just this once, to let one of the billionaires stand again, is a terrible way to run a supposed democracy.

It has been nearly 20 years since Ronald S. Lauder, the cosmetics heir, mounted a hugely expensive and unsuccessful campaign for mayor. And it has been 15 years since he single-handedly engineered and underwrote a referendum that enshrined him as the father of term limits for city officials.
In those intervening years, he has devoted himself to art collecting, philanthropy and commercial ventures abroad, occasionally stirring controversy, but largely staying off the political stage.
