Peter Sutherland had planned to retire as chairman of BP in 2008, but the search for a successor has taken longer than anticipated, so he has stayed on. He insisted, however, that this would be his last AGM. Despite a tumultuous year, Sutherland reinforced BP’s commitment to being a leading provider of energy. He reiterated BP’s firm commitment to addressing climate change and making investments in alternative energy.
