Economic crisis cuts carbon emissions


Carbon dioxide emissions from industrial plants and power stations in Europe’s cap-and-trade system plunged 11 per cent in 2009, thanks to the economic crisis.

The ETS covers some 10,500 industrial installations and power plants across the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, which account for nearly half of the region’s total emissions. It is the centerpiece of the EU’s plan to fight global warming by reducing its emissions.
